HTML e-mail Comparison Table

I tested 3 different HTML e-mail settings in 7 different email programs.

The Settings:

  • Attached Images, no CSS (the proposed workaround)
  • CSS test
  • Server Images, no CSS (the system we have in place)

The Email Apps:

  • Entourage MAC
  • Yahoo Mail
  • Gmail
  • Hotmail
  • Outlook 2003
  • AOL
  • Outlook 2002
Entourage MAC Yahoo Gmail Hotmail Outlook 2003 AOL Outlook 2002
Attached Images, no CSS no images no images no images no images OK no images OK
CSS test OK OK no layout no e-mail OK OK OK
Server Images, no CSS (default) OK after confirm OK after confirm OK OK OK after confirm OK OK

As you can see on the table above, The workaround proposed (images attached, instead of pointing to a server) actually works in Outlook 2003, but breaks in every other Email App.

The CSS test (that adds more layout features and is NOT related to the actual problem, but I decided to test the waters) works fine on some Email Apps, but is completely invisible for other. It's not the time, yet.

Server images, no CSS (the system we use so far) is the only one that works on EVERY Email app. In yellow, some restrictions:

Yahoo Mail asks if the sender is on your trust list. Saying yes will show the images on this ecollateral and the subsequent ones.

Outlook 2003 by default don't display server images. Instead, it shows a warning right after the sender information (see below).

To change the settings, click on the warning (see below) and choose "Change Automatic Download Settings..."

On the prompt window (see below), uncheck "Don't download pictures or other content automatically in HTML e-mail", and that's it. This email and the following ones will show the images correctly.
